The footpath behind the allotments
There is a footpath behind the allotments that nobody seems to use. It runs along a drainage ditch for about a mile and ends at a stile that has clearly seen better decades.
In April the hawthorn is just coming into leaf and the ditch is full of marsh marigolds. I saw the first swallows on Tuesday, low over the water, and stood there far longer than I meant to.
Wellington boots are not optional. I found that out the usual way.
